Customized Ankara fabrics have long been part of Nigeria’s culture of celebrating life, honouring loved ones, and marking significant occasions. Whether for weddings, birthdays, coronations, or burials, these fabrics tell stories that words often cannot.
For memorial events, the traditional approach has been to print large portraits of the deceased across the fabric. While this style remains popular, many families today are choosing a more timeless alternative. They want fabrics that preserve the significance of the occasion while remaining elegant enough to wear years later.
This shift is giving rise to a new concept that we describe as Institutional Branding Through Commemorative Fabrics.
Rather than centring the design on a person’s photograph, the fabric celebrates the institution, heritage, or values the individual represented.
At Ola Daviva, we recently had the privilege of bringing this concept to life during the first coronation anniversary of His Royal Majesty, Oba (Engr.) Isa Abiodun Olakunle Adejugbe, the Osolo of Isolo.
Celebrating More Than a Monarch
The first anniversary of a king’s coronation is not merely a celebration of one individual. It is a celebration of the throne, the history of the kingdom, and the people whose identity is closely connected to that institution.
The 2026 anniversary of the Osolo of Isolo reflected exactly that. Community members, traditional chiefs, cultural groups, and well-wishers gathered to celebrate the progress recorded during the monarch’s first year on the throne while reaffirming the customs and traditions that have defined the Isolo Kingdom for generations.
When we were commissioned to produce the commemorative Ankara, we saw an opportunity to tell that story differently.
Instead of repeating the King’s portrait throughout the fabric, we focused on the official symbol of the Osolo Kingdom.
It was a deliberate design decision.
Royal insignia are not ordinary decorative elements. They represent continuity, authority, heritage, and the enduring identity of a kingdom. Long after one monarch’s reign, the institution remains, carrying the history and aspirations of its people.
By allowing the royal emblem to become the focal point of the design, the fabric celebrated not just the monarch but the legacy of the Osolo Kingdom itself.
A Design That Lives Beyond the Occasion
One of the greatest compliments we received after the anniversary was that people wanted to continue wearing the fabric.
That is exactly what thoughtful customization should achieve.
Instead of becoming an outfit reserved for one ceremony, the Ankara transformed into a beautiful cultural fabric suitable for weddings, traditional festivals, thanksgiving services, family celebrations, and other important occasions.
The significance remained intact, yet the design felt timeless.
This is one of the reasons many families are now moving away from portrait-based customization.
They are looking for designs that honour the occasion without limiting how and when the fabric can be worn.
A New Direction for Customized Ankara
The Osolo project reminded us that commemorative fabrics can do much more than display a face.
They can communicate identity.
They can preserve heritage.
They can celebrate institutions.
They can tell stories through carefully chosen symbols rather than photographs.
This approach is equally suitable for royal anniversaries, memorial ceremonies, family reunions, church anniversaries, corporate milestones, and community celebrations.
A family crest may tell the story of generations.
A royal emblem may reflect centuries of leadership.
A cultural motif may preserve traditions that words cannot adequately describe.
Sometimes, these symbols carry greater meaning than a portrait ever could.
Looking Ahead
As customization continues to evolve, creativity will become just as important as the fabric itself.

The project for the first coronation anniversary of the Osolo of Isolo demonstrated exactly that.
By celebrating the institution rather than only the individual, we created a fabric that people will continue to wear with pride, while preserving the heritage, dignity, and cultural identity it represents.
